RapidMiner 9 includes a number of additional enhancements, including: Everyone who upgrades to RapidMiner 9 will automatically receive a 30-day trial of RapidMiner Studio Large, including Turbo Prep. Turbo Prep is included with paid and academic RapidMiner Studio licenses. Even experienced data scientists will love the productivity gains they’ll get with Turbo Prep.” When combined with RapidMiner Auto Model, analysts can now easily build predictive models on their own. “With Turbo Prep, analysts now have access to a purpose-built data prep experience right inside RapidMiner Studio. “RapidMiner Studio has always provided sophisticated data prep capabilities, but it was a bit daunting for analysts to learn,” said Ingo Mierswa, RapidMiner founder. Save data as Excel or CSV or send it to data visualization products like Qlik. When you are finished, send your data directly to RapidMiner Studio or Auto Model for model creation. Re-use and share: Create repeatable data prep processes to save time.Use Turbo Prep to quickly extract, join, filter, group, pivot, transform and cleanse your data. Blend, wrangle, and cleanse: Easily blend and join data from a variety of sources including relational databases, NoSQL, APIs, spreadsheets, applications, social media, and more.Point and click: Users interact intuitively with the data and immediately see how changes impact results in real time. With Turbo Prep, analysts can easily transform, pivot and blend data from multiple sources with a few clicks while instantly seeing the impact of the data prep actions on their data. Turbo Prep is a new product from RapidMiner that accelerates time-consuming data prep tasks to speed the productivity of analytics teams. According to a recent Harvard Business Review publication, analytics teams spend 80% of their time preparing data, slowed by clunky data prep tools and scarce data science expertise. I also found that the application lacks collaboration features which may be something that they could improve on in the future.RapidMiner, the leading data science platform for analytics teams, announced the immediate availability of RapidMiner 9.0 with Turbo Prep. This may not be a problem for people with a higher spec machine. This may be because the application is running on Java (VM). Aside from this I found that the application seems to hog my computers memory and cpu resources. This may be a problem limited to my own machine. What I found to be very inconvenient is that the application crashes at times. And finally, RapidMiner Studio has a community of data scientists that can help you when you have a question. Tutorial videos as well as blogs are available on their website. Each of the processes has their description, input, output, and parameters well described. One of the difficulties when dealing with code is tweaking the parameters of these models but because of the visual interface, you could simply click on the process and update this. RapidMiner Studio also has most of the machine learning models used in the academe and the industry. Data preparation to the final output and visualization is as simple as dragging blocks of your workflow into a canvas and connecting them altogether. This is because RapidMiner features are drag and drop visual interface which makes all the difference. However, this is now a thing of the past because of RapidMiner Studio. This can be a time consuming problem, especially for those who are not adept at programming. This is on top of having to analyze and learn complex algorithms needed for the task. One of the daunting requirements for data scientists and data storytellers is learning a programming language such as matlab and python and writing code for their tasks. Its well documented functions and strong community addresses what ever questions I had with the processes. It is a great tool for students and people without a strong programming background. It also allowed me to conveniently address my workflow without having to write code. It allowed me to rapidly try out different machine learning models and compare each result with one another. Overall my experience with using RapidMiner was great. When they get to the island, they find a copy of the poem “Ten Little Indians,” which describes ten gruesome deaths. If you haven’t read these books, watch out-there are spoilers ahead! Red Herring Example in And Then There Were None by Agatha ChristieĪgatha Christie’s famous novel And Then There Were None (1939) follows ten people who are invited by an unknown host to stay at a remote island. Let’s look at some red herring examples in classic mystery novels. The best way to understand what red herrings are is to see them in action. It’s a way to divert attention from what really matters, and it’s considered to be a logical fallacy because it's ultimately irrelevant to the main issue at hand. In logic, a red herring is a fallacy of distraction: bringing up another point to redirect the argument. For example, an earring next to the body matches a suspect’s earrings, but it later turns out to be a common earring worn by several people. A false clue appears to incriminate a suspect. An innocent character had the means to commit the murder-perhaps they were nearby, have no alibi, or were scheduled to meet the victim around the time of death. An innocent character had a strong motive to kill the victim, such as jealousy, blackmail, or an unpaid debt. Here are some examples of red herrings that you might see in mystery stories: The red herring also distracts the reader from figuring out the real culprit and may lead them to draw a false conclusion about someone innocent instead. In detective stories, a red herring is a misleading clue that directs the sleuth away from the true villain. Thus, the term red herring now refers to anything that distracts a reader from the true target. The etymology of this term is unclear, but some say the term dates back to an 1807 news story by journalist William Cobbett.Ĭobbett claimed that he could train hunting dogs by using red herrings-bony fish that were salted and smoked until they turned reddish-brown-to lay a false trail and distract dogs from the scents of the targets they were supposed to be chasing. In other words, red herrings draw the reader’s attention away from what’s really important, like a false clue that leads a detective away from the true culprit. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, a red herring is defined as “something that distracts attention from the real issue.”
The most common one involves leaving a mirror out under moonlight overnight. There are various methods for making magic mirrors. That’s the point when images and symbols begin to appear in the mirror. Some people stare at their own reflection until they start to see images in the mirror. Other practitioners use the “traditional material” of Stockholm tar, the material used to tar the hull of old sailing ships (1999: 89). Despite the name, it’s essentially a piece of glass with the back coated in black enamel paint. Doreen Valiente, in her classic Witchcraft for Tomorrow, talks about the “magic mirror” (1999: 89). Scrying is perhaps one of the more famous ways magical people use mirrors. This mirror came from Arabic magical traditions. This was a form of divination, similar to necromancy, in which you sought answers from supernatural beings. Once you did, “the spirit appear in the form of an armed knight seated on a horse and reveal everything about the past, present, and future” (8: 49). You’d follow the prescribed ritual to trap the demon Floron in the mirror. This was a highly polished mirror of pure steel. © Icy Sedgwickīut Page also notes the existence of a lesser-known magic mirror, the ‘Mirror of Floron’. Now in the collection of the British Museum. One of the most famous is the obsidian scrying mirror owned by Dr John Dee.ĭr John Dee’s obsidian mirror. Any shiny surface would do, though this makes it “difficult to identify medieval and early modern objects used specifically for magic” (2018: 46). Mirrors were just one of those devices (2018: 45). They needed a device that blurred the barriers between the spiritual and physical realms. Sophie Page explains that in the medieval era, people were considered too ‘unclean’ to speak to highly evolved beings like angels. People considered it bad luck to let babies see themselves in a mirror, while young women who spent too long gazing in the mirror would see the Devil (Simpson 2003: 241). It’s not just breaking mirrors that brings bad luck. Nowadays, they’re just a faff to clean up. The ‘bad luck’ is how long it would take to save up to buy a new one in bygone years. The more prosaic explanation for ‘seven years’ is down to the high cost of mirrors. The earliest reference to breaking a mirror being unlucky dates to 1777, but the ‘seven years’ time frame only appears in the mid-19th century (Simpson 2003: 241). Many people think breaking a mirror kicks off seven years of bad luck. Apparently, this one only dates to 1900 but it would be fascinating to know the root cause (2003: 241). Simpson and Roud also note the belief you should cover your mirrors during a thunderstorm. Some were so afraid of this that they even covered the “mirrors in the rooms of sick people” (Simpson 2003: 241). This was largely due to the belief that a person’s soul would become trapped in the mirror and be unable to leave. This was first recorded in 1786 in Orkney, though many of the other records are in the northern counties of England (2003: 241). Jacqueline Simpson and Steve Roud note the practice of covering a mirror in the home of a deceased person. That stops evil forces using them for nefarious purposes. If that’s you, draw protective symbols on the back of your mirrors. The somewhat dreary horror film Oculus (2013) relied on that very point. Some people worry about things accessing their home through the mirror. Hanging a mirror opposite a door helps keep evil entities out of your home or office. As a god of communication, the mirror allowed his followers to talk to him (Morris 1993: 173).Įven Merlin had a magic mirror, although his only saw into the future. He even wore a black mirror on his chest. Their mythology featured Tezcatlipoca, Lord of the Smoking Mirror. The Aztecs used obsidian to make their mirrors. Instead, Perseus never looks at her, only her reflection. The ‘rules’ say that you’ll be turned to stone if you meet her gaze. No one could look directly at Medusa and live to tell the tale. The Rokeby Venus by Diego Velázquez, via Wikimedia CommonsĪnd we can’t forget Perseus, who used his shield as a mirror to defeat Medusa. The new film, a thriller called Trance, was shot before the Games - often after a day of Olympics organisation, as if shooting a film were a second job - and edited afterwards. Only Boyle could get that sentiment into The Sun. ''The most important factor for cohesion of a country is that people have jobs,'' he was quoted as saying. ''Olympic spirit killed by recession,'' the headline read. The day his new film had its red-carpet premiere in London, there was Boyle on the front page of The Sun, a rabid red-top. Multi-threading is better: Geekbench 4 used multiple threads to work separately on different problems…one could argue it was a better test of “multi-tasking” than “multi-threading.” Geekbench 5 has new multi-threading modes where multiple threads work together on a single problem, which should better represent many multi-threaded apps.
